3.      Delian League- confederation against the Persians

4.      ostrakon- pottery fragment which was used to write the name of the person that one thought should be ostracized.

5.      History of the Peloponnesian War – book written by Thucydides on the Peloponnesian War.

6.      Age of Pericles- the height of Athenian power as a civilization

7.      Solon- ruler of Athens from 594-560 B.C.

8.      Pisistratus- aristocrat who seized Athenian power in 560 B.C.

9.      Cleisthenes – aristocrat who created Athenian council of 500.

10.  Pericles- aristocrat who witnessed the height of Athenian civilization

11.  Thucydides- historian who wrote History of the Peloponnesian War.

12.  Plataea- the city where the Athenians defeated the Persian army.

13.  Delos- an island which was the headquarters of the Delian League.

14.  Aegospotami on the Hellespont- the place where the Spartans destroyed the Athenian fleet.

Sparta

1.      Spartan- highly self-disciplined

2.      gerousia- council of elders

3.      apella- an assembly of all male citizens

4.      ephors- group of 5 men responsible for children education.

5.      Helots(capture)- name for the conquered Laconians .

6.      Laconia the area where the Spartans lived.

7.      Lycurgus Plutarch- lawgiver

HISTORY- Greek creation; systematic analysis of events; research and investigation

Herodutus- wrote History of the Persian Wars, first work of history. Dependent on oral history. 

Thucydides- wrote History of Peloponnesian War.  Emphasized accuracy and precision.  History great value in understanding present. 

DRAMA- Greek creation; plays performed by three male actors.

Tragedies- based on suffering hero, ending in disaster.   Focuses on one tragic event and its meaning. 

                        Aeschylus- first tragedian. Wrote Oresteia.

                        Sophocles- wrote Oedipus

Euripedes- wrote Bacchae.  Questioned morals and religion.

Comedies- first organized in festivals for Dionysus.  Focused on personal attacks and contemporary issues. 

Aristophanes- wrote Lysistrata. Comic, but effective message against war.

ART-  external expression of true ideals.  Human beings, as objects of great beauty.  Meant to civilize the emotions.

                        Architecture-  temples dedicated to gods and goddesses.

Doric- thick, fluted columns with simple capitals resting on a platform with no base. 

Ionic- slender columns with more elaborate base.  Spiral shaped capitals. 

Corinthian-  More detailed capitals, modeled after acanthus leaves. 

Sculptures- male nudity, favorite subject.  Relaxed attitude.  Sought to achieve standard ideal being.
